How to Wear a Sheer Dress

The sheer dress trend has intrigued me for months. I have seen gorgeous sheer dresses in collections from high end designers like Gucci to fast-fashion retailers like Forever 21 for months now! I haven’t hopped on the sheer dress bandwagon though because I always felt like a) I would have no idea how to style one and b) I would feel uncomfortable in one.

I do like stepping out of my fashion comfort zone for events though; so when it came time to pick an outfit for the opening night of Vancouver Fashion Week I knew that the sheer dress trend was exactly what I wanted to try out. I have always loved Fashion Week’s not only for the runway shows, but because they afford me the opportunity to create a bold outfit that I wouldn’t wear in my usual wear-to-work style.

I chose this floral embroidered sheer dress for a few reasons; and I think if you are apprehensive or nervous about wearing a sheer dress, this dress makes the perfect choice for a sheer dress for those exact reasons. So, let’s talk about what those are!

What to Look For in a Sheer Dress:

**When trying not to look like a club going 20 year old.

The cut of the dress.

The midi length and 3/4 sleeve arms of this dress definitely help you feel less exposed despite wearing sheer fabric. In contrast to the spaghetti strap sheer dresses that are everywhere, this midi dress feels more fashion-forward and less ‘going-to-the-club’. Flared sleeves are also trending in general this spring, so that is a nice touch as well!

The added details.

The second reason I chose this dress as my foray into the sheer dress trend is the floral embroidery. Again, I find the floral embroidery makes it more fashion forward and less bar scene. It also draws the eye to something other than just the sheerness of the dress.

Because I wanted a bold outfit for the opening night of Vancouver Fashion Week, I decided to wear black shorts (these are actually lululemon gym shorts lol) and a bra underneath. But, if you are looking for something more conservative this would like just as good with black leggings and a bra, or a black tank top and shorts. As long as there is some sheer fabric over just skin (and not other fabric) you’re still going to get that trendy sheer dress look. I’ll actually probably wear this dress a lot this spring to dinner’s out with leggings and a sweetheart neck camisole that I have.

Boden sent me this boots in January and I have been waiting for the perfect outfit to wear them with on the blog. This is definitely it! These boots also come in two other colors and I highly recommend them for spring. The are really comfortable (I have worn them for hours straight – including a 2 km walk!) so you get the benefit of a high heel without the pain. Score!

I know it is already Wednesday, but since I didn’t post on Easter Monday today is my first day to ask how your long weekend was! I hope you all had a great one and actually got in some rest and relaxation time. If you follow me on instagram you may have caught my instastories from Parq hotel. Parq offered to have me stay there Friday night so we decided to go and have a “James Bond night”. We dressed up, drank martinis, and went to the Casino. That was my first ever time in a Casino in Canada, so it was pretty cool!

The rest of the weekend was jam packed with other fun activities including a hike in Deep Cove (an easy, but gorgeous hike just outside Vancouver) and a wine and cheese night in. All in all the perfect long weekend!

I love love how you styled this beautiful sheer embroidered dress. Vancouver Fashion Week was a great place to wear this too, especially with those beautiful red booties. I recently wore a tulle sheer black floral embroidered top but with a cami underneath. I am dying to try it with just a black bra next time.
