Polka dots are back baby! Okay; they never really ‘left’, but they are definitely more popular in fashion this year than they have been in some time. As such, today I’m talking about how to style polka dots for spring/summer 2019.
Unlike in season’s past where polka dots were reserved for more classic, feminine pieces like wrap dresses or a-line skirts, this spring/summer we are seeing polka dots on everything from wide leg pants (like the ones I’m wearing), to jeans, to boyfriend fit blazers. So;
Step 1 for how to style polka dots for spring/summer 2019:
Pick less traditional pieces!
Both my wide leg pants and balloon sleeve crop top are fresh silhouettes for spring/summer and perfect choices for polka dots.
Step 2 for how to style polka dots for spring/summer 2019:
Try polka dots on polka dots!
The key to print mixing polka dots is to find pieces that give the outfit continuity – either because of polka dot size or color. Having a top and bottoms in the same color with totally different size polka dots is one easy way to do that. The other way, what I’m doing here, is to find pieces in different colors where the polka dots are the same size as each other. You also just can’t go wrong with a classic mixing of black & white!
Let’s talk about my polka dot outfit. I am obsessed with these wide leg polka dot pants! They are so chic, hit at the perfect high-waist spot, and are also really comfortable. I’ve worn them no less than 6 times in the month I’ve owned them!
The one thing I will note about the pants is that they are very long. They fit true to size (I’m wearing a 6) but I am 5’8 and I couldn’t wear these with flats! With my heels they are perfect, but otherwise they wouldn’t work. If you are under 5’6, just know then that you will likely need to get these hemmed!
My polka dot crop top has also quickly become a spring/summer closet staple. (I wore it a ton during my NY trip two weeks ago.) You can see another way I styled it here.
Have a great weekend everyone! I am so excited for it because it is going to be 23 degrees (that’s about 73 Fahrenheit) here in Vancouver! I plan to be at the beach or on a patio as much as humanly possible for the next 48 hours haha. weekend is also Mother’s Day!
Since my mom lives across the country I won’t be celebrating with her, but I’m there in spirit! I just wan to give a shout out to all you mommas out there. You have one of the toughest (and luckiest) jobs and I hope you feel loved and spoiled this weekend!! To anyone for whom Mother’s Day is a difficult, for whatever reason, know that I am sending you virtual hugs through cyberspace! See you all back here next week!
