I don’t know much about my ancestry or genetics because my maternal grandmother was adopted and I background on my birth father’s side. A few months ago I decided I wanted to know more so I went down the rabbit hole of internet-researching DNA kits. There are so many options out there – with varying levels of reliability, price, and differences in what information they provide. After much research I decided to order a 23 & Me Health & Ancestry Kit. Today I am sharing my honest review of the 23 & Me DNA kit.
Wondering what the heck I’m doing in the photo above?? I swear it relates to the DNA kit – read on to see how 👀

Two Types of 23 & Me DNA Kits:
23 & Me has two different DNA kit options – the Ancestry Service & the Health & Ancestry Service. You can read the specific differences on their website; but in short – the Health & Ancestry kit has all of the ancestral components of the initial kit, but you also get access to far more health information from genetic predispositions to various diseases, to traits you may be more likely to have.
The second kit is more expensive but in my opinion if you’re going to spend money anyway on a DNA Kit the added cost of a more expansive, more fulsome report is completely worth it.
The Process of Getting Your 23 & Me DNA Kit:
The process of getting my DNA results could not have been easier. They mail you a kit with clear instructions about how to provide the spit sample. You provide it and then mail it back to their labs (everything is included and prepaid).
One thing I really liked is that once you mail it they e-mail you periodic updates (see image below) to keep you in the loop about what is happening with your sample.
If you factor in the time it takes the sample kit to arrive to you, then allowing a few days for you to provide your sample and drop the kit off in the mail, the whole process from pressing the order button to having your results takes around 7 – 8 weeks.
The 23 & Me DNA Kit Results – What They Actually Tell You:
Alright, let’s get to the good stuff -the results! I was so pleased with the wealth information provided; both of a serious nature and the more fun aspect.
The information the 23 & Me DNA kit provides can be broken down into three main categories; ancestry, serious health matters & fun wellness results / traits. I’ll go through each in more detail.
Under ancestry you learn more information, obviously, about your ancestry. You get a general summary report (mine is pictured below) and then subreports on things like how many DNA relatives you have that have already used 23 & Me.
As you can see from my report below, I am 100% European. My dad (technically my stepfather) is Welsh so I have always identified as Welsh. I was thrilled to discover that I actually have some Welsh DNA in me!
I was also able to see not only how many DNA relatives I have, but where they are located. I have 1100 relatives on 23 & Me, and I’m not gonna lie I am pretty pleased to say that the highest concentration of them live in California. Aka. my favorite Aka. my relatives know what’s up lol.
2) Serious Health Matters – Predisposition & Carrier Status
You’re able to check off whether or not you want to know about genetic predisposition to certain incurable diseases – please note they only give you these results if you specifically request and consent to them. These include the tests for Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s & BRCA 1/2 (the genes associated with breast & ovarian cancer).
Whether or not you want to find out this information is obviously a very personal decision. My grandmother passed away from Alzheimer’s so I am at greater risk for it. After some long and hard thinking I decided that I am simply the type of person who likes to be armed with as much knowledge as possible (… what can I say; it’s the lawyer in me haha). I decided to get the results for all three genetic predispositions. I am relieved and happy to say that I do not have any of the above noted gene variants.
In addition to those serious ones for which you provided added consent, they do also test for predisposition to a number of manageable illnesses. Everything from a predisposition to type 2 diabetes to celiac disease.
3) Wellness & Traits:
Okay this part is just crazy interesting and fun. Under wellness, you get reports about how your DNA may affect aspects of your life, everything from whether you are a light or deep sleepover, to whether you are likely to consume more or less caffeine. Pictured below are my wellness results. I am not surprised to hear that I am more likely to consume high amounts of caffeine but guys; one thing shocked me… I HAVE ELITE MUSCLE MASS! SAY WHAAAAAAT. LOL.
Honestly I’m not sure if this makes me feel better or worse about myself because on the one hand; awesome. But on the other hand I’m like, ‘wow, I really should be in better shape’. #oops.
After wellness, you also get DNA results relating to traits – which again is just super interesting, light-hearted and fun. This was one has SO many results, that I won’t share them all hear, but I do have a screen grab below that shows some of the ones I was most excited about.
As you can see from the first one – I am less likely to be afraid of heights; which is definitely true. I have zero fear of heights! That, my friends, is what my dorky self is trying to show in the first photo of this blog post. 🙊
The other thing you can see below that I have to talk about because I FEEL VINDICATED Y’ALL – I am more likely to be bitten by mosquitoes. I knew it!!! I have always said that if I am sitting in a group of people and mosquitoes are out everyone else will get 2-3 bites and I will come home absolutely covered. I feel seriously so strangely vindicated to have my DNA results telling me it’s not all in my head lol.
Now, of course while there is some science behind this, a lot of it is just more or less likely so of course it won’t all be true for you. For example, it says I am less likely to hate chewing sounds, when in fact I actually suffer from really bad misophonia! I’ve actually had to get up and temporarily excuse myself from work lunch meetings before because it can get so bad. Ugh!
So. Overall. I highly recommend the 23 & Me DNA kit. It gives you important information but also is just really fun and interesting! If you’re planning on ordering a 23 & Me DNA kit click here to get 10% off your order!
