For the second post in my “Inspired By:” series in honor of Women’s History Month, I’m I’m sharing a post inspired by Iris Apfel. Check out my first post if you missed it; Inspired By: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez!
Have you heard of Iris Apfel? Iris is a 98 year old fashion icon. Yes, you read that right, ninety-eight. Iris began her career working for Women’s Wear Daily before transitioning into interior design and running a design company with her late husband. Their textile company became hugely successful – so much so that she oversaw design renovation projects for the White House under nine, yes 9, different US Presidents!
Iris Apfel was known in the design world (and socialite world from what I understand!) but that was it until 2016. In 2016 she was in a commercial and things in the media really took off for her from there. Last year, at the age of 97 years old, she signed a contract with one of the world’s biggest modelling agencies; IMG. This makes her one of the oldest fashion models out there.
I find this so inspiring for a couple of reasons. First, I LOVE that she is the perfect example of the idiom “you’re never too old!” She began her modelling career in her 90’s for crying out old. Whenever I feel like my best is behind me or feel like I’ve settled into my life, I remind myself of this. You may find yourself getting older or feeling like new adventures are behind you, but Iris Apfel is an excellent reminder that you can do new things, you can have crazy new experiences, at literally any age.
Second, I find Iris Apfel and her late-blooming career inspiring because it is a true reminder that beauty is not defined by youth.
Finally, I find Iris inspiring because she owns her sense of style. She has a bold sense of fashion and she is not afraid to love that and rock it daily. Which brings me to the next part of my Inspired By series – how my outfit is inspired by the woman I’m talking about!
Iris Apfel’s style can only be described as bold. She loves color and texture ( so. many. feather. pieces) and she loves bold accessories. Her signature item is her bold round glasses (she has a ton of colors) but she loves other accessories like scarves and boas almost as much. This crystal jewel headpiece, therefore, seemed like something she would totally love! I love this unique piece too and think it would be perfect for a summer outfit – especially for a festival / concert look! It would also be a really cool piece to wear for a bachelorette!
As far as the rest of my look, I feel like Iris would love the floral print of this blouse – given that she is the queen of prints! I can’t recommend this blouse enough for spring/summer. I’ll be wearing it a ton! My dramatic tie waist pants are one of my favorite spring purchases. I have them from last season in camel but just love this slate blue shade for spring. I’ll be wearing these to the office and on the weekends.
