Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi represents everything I hope to be as a woman – she’s smart, confident, calm during chaos, and fueled by a desire to help not a desire to be in the limelight. She’s one of the top women in power in the US and goes to bat regularly against individuals seeking to undermine her. She’s a complete badass so it’s no wonder I couldn’t resist including her in my “Inspired By” series (see the first entry in the Inspired By series for more info on it).
I’m Inspired By: Nancy Pelosi. Nancy Pelosi is someone I admire so much for her fierce dedication to both her family and her service to her country and the US people throughout her career in politics. Nancy Pelosi curently serves as US Speaker of the House, a role she has been in since 2019. She is the first woman in US history to be Speaker of the House and she remains the highest-ranking female elected official in US history. (Though I know we will have a female president one day! It will happen in my lifetime!)
Nancy Pelosi has a longstanding career in politics, and was elected to congress in the 80’s. She’s served in a number of capacities including leader of the House Democractic Caucus when the Democrats lost control of the House of Representatives in 2011. She has, therefore, an incredibly long history shaping the laws of the US and in a lot of ways shaping the world we live in. While I don’t agree with everything she has ever done, she has been someone who time and time again has stood up for the rights of people who don’t have a voice. She has stood up for civil liberties, advocating for LGBTQ rights and advocating for immigrant children taken from their parents. I will always be inspired by people who use their power to advocate for those without it.
Another thing that inspires me about Nancy Pelosi is her advocacy for girls and women. She is a strong proponent of the education of girls across the world and fostering increased participation by women in politics and business. She is a woman ‘ahead of her time’ on so many issues and it inspires me that she is willing to change her opinions with the times and learn and grow as a person and a political representative.
On to fashion! I’m inspired by Nancy Pelosi as she is the queen of the colored pantsuit. I love how many bold suits she has and her love of accessorizing them with statement necklaces and colored heels. In honor of Nancy Pelosi’s boss-level fashion I decided to style this soft pink herringbone suit with a white bodysuit, white heels and a gold coin “Y’ necklace.
I can’t recommend this pantsuit enough! Both the blazer and pants are under $40 and the material is thick enough to feel well-made and like you’re supported without feeling too heavy/hot for spring/summer. The suit is from H&M and I would say the sizing is ‘true to H&M sizing’ – which means it runs smaller than other stores. If you know your size at H&M by your usual size, if you’re not used to shopping at H&M go up one size from your usual. I wear a size 6 and went with an 8 in these (and they are still a bit tighter than I’d like to be honest!)
My bodysuit is also one I recommend to people a lot. The high crew neck cut is perfect to wear to work and the bodysuit style means you’re not dealing with your shirt bugging you all day by bunching and un-tucking. The bodysuit also comes in black and tan – all 3 colors are great closet staples!
