Missing Your Friends? Gift a Socially Distanced Care Package

April 16, 2020

socially distanced care package gift idea

It’s hard to believe we’re now over a month into social distancing measures. We’re dealing with a situation that is unprecedented in our (and our parents, and grandparents) lifetime. While I don’t pretend to understand the unique and nuanced challenges everyone is facing, I do think that a lack of social interaction has impacted everyone. It’s hard not to see your friends and family and show your love in all the little ways: from a hug, to buying them a drink, or treating them to a birthday night out.

Alex & I have definitely been missing our tribe and so we decided to create gift bags to curb-side deliver to our friends (staying at the car / socially distancing of course). Deciding what to get for the gifts bags and actually putting them together was a fun activity in and of itself, and we’re excited to gift them to our friends tonight! Head to my instagram stories today for some footage of our delivery escapades!

What to Include in a Socially Distanced Care Package:

Coffee Mug:

We’re all home. All the time. Drinking all the coffee. (Or wine out of coffee mug, #dontjudge 🙊). A Cute coffee mug makes a great gift idea for a socially distanced care package. You can tailor it to the person’s specific tastes or go for something that gives back! Alex & I gifted this “Socially Distant” coffee mug from a local boutique, The Heart. The owner is giving back $3 of the sale of each mug to charity to help those affected by COVID-19 and/or struggling with poverty and food security right now. Below are other funny/cute mugs that would make a great addition to the care package.

Candles:

I repeat: we. are. all. stuck. at. home. Might as well brighten up your space with a pretty and good smelling candle! Below are some of my favorites.

Toilet Paper:

It’s a funny, cheap addition to the gift bag, and honestly it’s practical!

At Home Beauty Products:

You can get some great face masks, nail polish or other beauty goodies at affordable prices and include those. Personally, Alex & I got this face mask set since it’s great quality but a good deal when buying as a set (6 masks for under $21, so only $3 per person). Take a look at some of the other beauty products I’d recommend for this socially distanced care package below:

Coloring Pages:

If you have a printer at home, this is a great (and affordable!) thing to include. You can google pages to suit your friend’s particular tastes, print them and include them in the gift bag. Everyone needs distraction right now and adult coloring is perfect for that!

Candy:

Pick up a few bags of candy and throw them in the care packages. Who doesn’t love a little  sweet treat!

Loungewear:

This one is (clearly) a bit of splurge but depending on what you want to spend per socially distanced care package (Alex & I kept it to under $35 per person) you could add in some cozy sweatpants or a soft tee! I’ve linked up some below that are all less than $18.

  4. I love this idea! The coffee mug and the candle are always nice, I guess, and now will lift up our spirits. The toilet paper made me laugh, not exactly something beautiful, but super useful of course.

What a great idea. I’m not going out at all but I have a lot of masks and other small products like new travel size mascaras that I could use for a surprise box. This is a favorite post of mine of your posts.

This is my favorite blog post of yours! Seriously, what a cute idea. I’m creating boxes for friends that live in other states, but I like the idea of making these for friends that live nearby and just dropping them off. What a fun way to spread cheer!

    • Lee says:

Ah really!? That sucks! I’ve heard horror stories of people not being able to find it, but we’ve been really lucky here in Vancouver. There are three grocery stores we go to (all within walking distance of us) and they’ve all had TP in stock every time we’ve been!

  28. Michelle Damon says:

Thank you for the ideas! So hard being away from those we care about right now & what better way to make someone smile?! Everyone could use a reason to smile

Lee, I love this idea! I have been sending cards with small gifts to friends, mostly my single friends who live alone, but I haven’t yet done the whole care package thing yet! Although I did just mention it to my husband about sending a care package to his mom who lives alone and is 300 miles away from us! Thanks for the lovely ideas and linking up with me.
