I’ve mentioned before that Alex & I have been on a major home renovation & decor kick these past few months. Once we finished turning the 2nd bedroom into my home office / closet we knew our next big project would be tackling our balcony.
Like many apartment dwellers we have a pretty boring concrete balcony. We’re lucky in that it’s a decent size for an apartment balcony (~ 7 ft x 8 ft) but, so far, we haven’t done much to make it a functional space or one we want to spend time in. We are changing that this spring! In order to get design and decor inspiration I took to Pinterest (classic lol) and wanted to share with you what my inspiration is for this renovation.
As you’ll see in the 15 balcony decor ideas below, there are a few decor elements that are repeated over and over that you can be sure would make an excellent addition to your balcony decor:
1. Lots of Greenery
Having a ton of plants and greenery on a balcony is a no brainer, and for that ‘pinterest worthy’ balcony think about having greenery at different heights throughout the space. It grabs the eye and adds dimension to a simple space.
2. Textiles Are Your Friend
What most visually appealing balcony spaces have in common is a mix of textiles. Again, this adds depth and dimension to the space, so pick an outdoor cushion you love for your space and add in coordinating pillows, blankets and an outdoor rug. Mix up your textures and colors for added depth.
3. Don’t Forget the Floor!
One of the most boring parts of an apartment is the standard concrete floor and it is so easy to change this. There are affordable click-together-tiles or opt for a decorative outdoor rug.
4. Think About How You’ll Use The Space
Some of the below photos just have couches and lounge seating, while others have a small table instead. Think about whether you want to create an area to lounge and read books, or whether you’d like a space to sit and eat. If the later, be sure to think about whether it will just be for two of you, in which case a table and chairs will work well or if you want more than 2 creating a bar stool style area is a better use of your space in this small area.
I’ll link my current favorite balcony decor pieces at the end, so be sure to read on for that. In terms of the best places to get balcony or patio decor:
Affordable = World Market, Wayfair & Target
Luxurious = Joss & Main & Serena & Lily
Decor Items = Anthropologie Home & Pottery Barn

Isn’t it!! I am definitely going for an ‘oasis in the city’ vibe for our balcony so that’s what I was trying to find with these inspo balconies – one’s that make you feel calm and cozy.
This sure does make me wish I had a balcony or back patio. I have a tiny slab of concrete facing the woods behind my townhome and it’s not possible to decorate it. Talk about a bummer. But I love these gorgeous spaces so much!
Aw I feel ya! Especially being stuck at home I think we all wish we had a little more outdoor space!
These are all so dreamy! I have a small balcony myself and have been struggling with how to make the small space work. But some great ideas here that I would love to incorporate…thanks for sharing! xoxo, Sarah

What lovely ideas! We don’t have a balcony but I have been thinking of ways we could freshen up our patio a little – not something we can do at the moment with our foster dog’s kennel out there, but something we can do in the future maybe! 🙂 Thanks for sharing the inspiration!
Hope that you are having a nice weekend 🙂
So sweet that you have a foster pup!!! And haha yes it may be hard to decorate with the kennel, but Im sure you can find a corner of the patio to turn into a cute nook for you to spend time in! <3
I am so lucky to have a huge garden, but if I would have a balcony I wished it looks like these! They look fantastic!
