Labor Day always marks the unofficial start of fall in my mind. While it’s been sunny and hot here in Vancouver I’m still ready for all things fall, including fall fashion! If you’ve been a LegalLee Blonde reader for a while you know that I do quarterly posts on the biggest fashion trends for the season (check out Summer’s biggest fashion trends post!)
With the huge shift COVID has brought to our society it feels like a very different fall and that fall fashion needs to be different. I know many people are on tighter budgets than usual and are looking to shop less than they maybe would have under normal circumstances. For that reason I wanted to bring you not only 5 fall 2020 fashion trends that you will love, but also 5 “tested and true trends”; I.e. 5 things that have been trendy the last few years that are still trending this season. You’ll likely have some if not all of these trends in your closet already making it easier to stay fashionable and feel great while staying on a budget. Let’s get to it!
1. Metallics:
For fall 2020 metallic pieces will be a huge trend. Think metallic pants (like my culottes in the outfit above!), metallic tops and even metallic trench coats and bomber jackets. For a look that is fashion forward without screaming LOOK AT ME I’M SO SHINY opt for more subtle metallic hues in shades of bronze and copper.
2. Tweed:
This is not your grandmother’s fabric anymore! Tweed is back in a big way. You can keep it professional with a tweed blazer (very vintage Chanel vibes) or go for a 90’s night out look with a mini skirt and jacket set. Style tip: Because it is a thicker fabric it can be overwhelming so stick with slim fit silhouettes and it won’t add bulk to your look.
3. Oversized Shirts & Blazers
The fashion week runways last year were full of this trend. Designers ranging from Dior, to Alice and Olivia, to Elle Tahari all showcased oversized shirts and blazers as part of their fall collections. And it’s easy to see why the look is so popular – it’s comfortable, chic, and works on every body. Remember to pair an oversized shirt or blazer with slim fit pants or a skirt – one oversized piece is enough!
4. Baby Doll Dresses
Baby doll (also spelled babydoll) dresses are far from a new silhouette. They’ve been popular for years in the spring and and summer as people reach for summery dresses for backyard BBQ’s and days at the beach. What is new though is seeing this silhouette take the stage as a fall fashion trend. Loose fit babydoll dresses (especially in earth tones) will be one of the biggest trends you’ll see this fall!
5. Bra Tops
To be clear, these are not actual bras but tops cut in the style of a bra. It’s the crop top’s even flirty sister (if you will). For fall you’ll see bra tops worn under blazers with high waisted jeans or pants as a big trend. Another trendy way to style them if you’re less inclined to show that much skin is to layer a bra top over a button down shirt. A black bra top worn over a white button down has an edgy but polished vibe that you can rock all fall/winter!
As mentioned at the beginning of this post, these are 5 trends that you’ll likely be familiar with and may have in your closet already. These styles are still going strong this fall so pull these out of your closet and you’re good to go! I’ll still share a few links of each trend below for those of you who may still be wanting/needing to add these into your fall wardrobe.
1. OTK Boots
Unsurprising I’m sure, over the knee boots are still trendy this fall. And thank goodness because honestly they are the best things to happen to our legs since sliced bread. The ability to wear leggings or a skirt and look cute while STAYING WARM thanks to your boots? THAT is a trend we can all get behind! I have last season’s Steve Madden OTK boots which I plan on wearing a ton again this year. I can’t recommend them enough! This season’s are nearly identical and they are under $100 but look like the $800 Stuart Weitzman boots. I’ll link them (and a few other favorite pairs) below.
2. Knee High Boots
Last year was all about OTK boots and ankle booties, with knee high boots kind of taking a back seat. This year they are more popular and chances are you have some in your closet already! I like riding boot styles (perfect for a casual look) and have/love Tory Burch Riding boots. I’m also seeing a lot of high heeled knee high boots on fashion runways and in magazines this season though, so keep your eyes peeled for those as well!
3. Jewel Tones
Every fall it seems designers swoon for jewel tones and this year is no exception. Emerald green, royal blue and deep wine pieces (sweaters, blouses, jackets, etc) will all look trendy and stunning this fall.
4. Plaid
No fall is complete without at least a little plaid in your life! From years past you probably have at least one plaid shirt or scarf in your closet! If you’re looking to add more plaid into your life plaid mini skirts are particularly trendy this year.
5. Faux Fur Coats
Whether it’s the breakout item of 2018 fall (faux fur teddy coats) or a more traditional faux fur stole, faux fur outwear is trending again for fall 2020.
Which of these fall 2020 fashion trends is your favorite?! Of the new trends I probably love bra tops the most (I just got the perfect one to wear over a white button down shirt and my faux leather leggings). Of the tried, tested & true ones I’d have to say OTK boots are my favorite, but I really do love them all!
I can’t wait to start wearing fall outfits… I’m already thinking about what to wear for our fall adventures this year! Alex and I have a couple things already planned including visiting a pumpkin patch and doing a cidery crawl! I’m so excited, I just love this time of year!

All of trends are fabulous for fall, but I think with the shift to virtual work environments this year my favorite is going to be jewel tones! They really pop on screen!

Jewel tones are one of my favorite trends in fall. That maroon is my favorite! Also I want coats, but they never make sense in AZ!!
Haha oh man I can only imagine the AZ heat makes it challenging to dress for fall!
The metallic pants are awesome! I frequently regret selling a pair of gold metallic jeans, but I wore them so little! And babydoll dresses will always be a favourite of mine 🙂
