With fall finally underway and a lot of us reaching for our trusty fall wardrobe staples I wanted to bring you a post on some closet staples to transition into fall. These may be pieces you already have in your closet and, if you don’t, are pieces worth investing in as they will take you from season to season, year to year. I’ll include a round-up of my favorites of each of the 8 items so you can shop if you’re interested!
my outfit: long cardigan // skinny jeans // OTK Boots // similar belt bag
Before I get into the 8 closet staples to transition into fall let me briefly talk about my outfit! This long line cardigan is perfect for layering and therefore great for fall. It’s 40% off an so selling fast. It’s only available in olive green still in an XL, but other colors have more sizes available.
My skinny jeans are a splurge, but trust me the fit/cut is well worth it. These are the BEST jeans for your booty! Super flattering, super comfortable and they stretch out with wear. I highly recommend them! The website says they run big and to size down, but I don’t find that at all. I’m wearing my usual size 6 and they fit like a glove!
Lastly, my OTK boots. Mine are Steve Madden from last season, but they made a nearly identical pair of OTK boots this season. These are my favorite OTK boots because they actually stay up (hallelujah!) and they come to a good place above the knee. If you’re on the taller side (I’m 5’7 1/2) these boots are great since they do still come comfortably above your knee.
Ahhh the old standby, skinny jeans lol. Despite the move towards boyfriend cut and wide leg crop jeans this summer, chances are most of you have a pair (or five lol) of skinny jeans in your closet. These are an excellent cut for fall since they pair so well with oversized sweaters. Remember the rule: oversized on top, fitted on bottom or fitted on top, oversized on bottom – never both of you’ll look like you’re drowning in a sea of fabric! Skinny jeans are also great because they tuck in so easily to knee high or OTK boots. If you are looking for new skinny jeans this season though, below are my top three picks at splurge, average and save pricing.
As mentioned above, this style of pant was popular this spring/summer, and lucky for us isn’t going anywhere for fall. While skinny jeans are great for styling with an oversized sweater and OTK boots, wide leg crop jeans are perfect for a sweater and ankle boots. The wide leg fit is really flattering and paired with ankle boots they show a bit of leg, ensuring you don’t look shorter/frumpy. If you’re still in the market for a pair of wide leg crops, my faves are:
As we move into cooler weather a faux leather jacket is an excellent way to take your looks into the new season. Especially if you’re wearing a lot of your summer tops, a faux leather jacket works really well to make your outfit feel more fall. My current favorites are:
The OTK boot trend is still going strong this year, and I for one am thrilled. I love the combo of skinny jeans or leggings with OTK boots and a cozy tunic. I’ll share my favorite OTK boots below, there are so many great options. I personally have the black suede pair discussed above and this cognac suede pair and love them. They are great if you’re taller with thicker calves (like me!)
Many of you likely have these in your closet from summer! Cream & tan ankle boots were a surprisingly popular footwear choice this summer and they are easy to transition into fall. As mentioned, they look particularly good with wide leg cropped jeans but you can also pair them skinny jeans and fall dresses. They’re versatile and can often be really comfortable! My favorite light colored ankle boots available now are:
A quality rancher hat will take you from a boho summer look to a gimme-all-the-fall-things fall look. I recently splurged on this Lack of Color Rancher Hat and could not be more pleased with it. The quality is obvious and it will look great for years to come. I’ll also link a similar version below (people are calling this UO one a Lack of Color hat dupe) and some other cute ones I found. I just discovered the brand Gigi Pip and they’re hats look amazing. They all come in multiple colors so click through to find the perfect one for you.
If I had to pick one item that helps take your closet from summer to fall it would definitely be a long cardigan. The one I’m wearing comes in a ton of colors, is super soft and is under $50. I’ll link some other options below as well!
The ultimate staple for layering, a lightweight turtleneck is perfect to transition into fall. While the weather is still warmer, wear it on it’s own and when it gets colder add a chunky knit cardigan or sweater vest for added warmth. I swear by the JCrew Tissue Turtlenecks since they have the perfect balance of fitted, but not skin tight, and of thin without being see-through. I’ll also link a few other similar ones I’ve found:
That’s it! I hope you found some ideas of what items to pull from your closet to transition into fall and some new pieces you may want to buy. I am in full fall-mode over here as the leaves have finally started to change and we’ve started in on fall decorating and baking. I actually just picked up a bunch of Halloween decor last night and will probably start putting up those decorations on the weekend. PSA: If you’re looking for Halloween decor I found that Michaels had a ton of great stuff, and most of it is on sale already!
These are great staples! I’m definitely into light colored boots, rancher hats and OTK boots, of course! So excited to wear my fall outfits!

The OTK boots have been the reigning shoe champ for autumn/winter… how many years now??? And I still have yet to get a pair? I sure do wish they weren’t so dang pricey, but I guess if they’re not going anywhere, it could be extremely worth it to invest in them. Plus, they’re so gorgeous with a million different outfits! I love all the items you listed here. I want it all haha!
Haha aw thanks Steph! And yes, the OTK boots can be pricey for sure, but I’ve found a bunch under $150 and a few even under $60! Check out this post for them: https://www.legalleeblonde.com/2019/10/the-best-fall-boots-under-150.html
