Before I get into this post on the 7 biggest fashion trends for summer 2020, let’s not pretend that things are ‘business as usual’ in the world right now. We are in the midst of what I can only hope is a real, lasting upheaval to the system of racial oppression upheld by the criminal justice system, the medical system, and the education system both in the US & here in Canada. I am hopeful that real change will come out of the riots & protests happening in cities all across North America. I wrote a blog post last week on Legal Defense Funds Supporting Black Lives Matter & the resources I’m using to educate myself on BLM & systemic Racism. I hope you will read it. I’ll be updating it over the coming weeks as I learn more.
Today, I wanted to share this fashion related post that I’ve been working on. Why? Because I do think it’s okay to care about justice and political issues while still loving fashion. You can educate yourself and then do some summer shopping. That is okay. Plus, you can use your wallet to support companies that are taking a stand right now and doing good in the world. For example, the tie-dye maxi dress I’m wearing in these photos is from Red Dress Boutique. They are a boutique I have loved and shopped for years. They have stood up this past week and half, have recognized with humility that they were not as diverse as they could be. They have started profiling more Black women and other persons of color and pledge to continue to do so. They have also put their money where their mouth is and have donated to causes including the Minnesota Freedom Fund.
So, let’s talk about summer fashion. Also – trust me you want to read to the end of this post since I’m sharing a giveaway for a $1000 Amazon Gift Card!!
There are a lot of great trends this summer, but here are the 7 biggest fashion trends for summer 2020:
tie-dye maxi dress – on sale! // denim jacket // sandals – on sale & come in a ton of colors! // earrings
1. Tie Dye
This trend isn’t going anywhere as we move into summer – it’s just moving from loungewear to more statement pieces like dresses, swimsuits & even shoes.
2. Bucket Hats
I saw this trend a lot at fashion week last September and am really excited it’s hitting mainstream trends this summer. I am not a hat person usually but this style is super flattering and – bonus – it’s added sun protection from the summer sun and great for a bad hair day.
3. Shoes Worn Over Pants
This is probably my favorite summer 2020 fashion trend and you’ve probably seen it celebrities and instagram fashion icons already. Basically, just take any lace-up pair of shoes and tie over top of your pants. I’ll share a catalog below of some instagram photo examples of this.
4. Dramatic Sleeves
Whether it’s on a dress, a top or even a bodysuit you’ll be seeing tons of dramatic sleeves this summer. This trend is great because it’s an easy way to amp up an outfit and feel a little bit extra (in the best way!) For a more subtle take on this trend go with a puff shoulder top and for something more dramatic go with balloon sleeves. The bigger the better!
5. Square Toed Heels
I was SO uncertain of this trend and now I’m probably it’s biggest fan haha. All 4 pair of shoes I’ve purchased for summer are square toe. I was surprised at how much more flattering this shape is on an open toed shoe! Highly recommend trying this one out!
6. Voluminous Dresses
Similar to dramatic sleeves, voluminous dresses are another one of the biggest fashion trends for summer 2020. Whether it’s a more classic trapeze dress (hello 60’s vibes) or a tiered or puffed dress it is all about volume this summer. Honestly, this trend is great because you can wear it no matter how you’re feeling that day (we all have days where we may not love how our body look) and you can feel amazing in it. So great.
7. Heirloom Inspired Accessories (aka. Granny Chic)
This trend is so much fun!! Think of accessories your grandma would love and go crazy. I’m talking brooches, hair pins, glasses chains and scarves. Pearl details are also trending so pearl embellishments on any of these is a double win!

I absolutely LOVE the big sleeves this season, as well as the voluminous dresses!
They’re such pretty trends right!!
I love the voluminous dresses, dramatic sleeves and heirloom inspired jewelry (I have the real thing because I’m granny chic haha). I can’/t do the bucket hat… brings me back to the days of boy bands and super low rise jeans lol.

You look so beautiful in Heirloom pieces like pearls! and haha oh man I like bucket hats but even the word low rise jeans makes me shudder lol!! Let’s never go back to that trend k? K. haha
I definitely will read your post because systemic racism for sure happens. I’m not black but I’m a WOC experienced racism. So thanks for sharing your knowledge. On a positive note, your tie-dye maxi dress is so cute!

Thank you so much Rach. I hope you find the most helpful. Sometimes I forget that I can use my voice around legal issues to help important issues and I am pledging to do more of that going forward.
Re the outfit post – thank you!! I love the dress. It’s such an easy throw-on-and-go piece (and it’s by a company that has stood up and donated funds this week so I am proud to support them!)
These are all great trends. And thank you for using your voice!

Thanks Rebecca!!
This tie dye dress is beautiful, love the colors! I need to get some tie dye into my summer wardrobe stat!
Thank you Amanda! <3
Love this post! I think it’s hilarious that you called the heirloom trend “granny chic” – I’m so here for brooches. I also think the puff sleeves are super cute, and I haven’t seen the shoes-over-pants trend yet. The only thing I can’t get on board with are the bucket hats! And I’m a little surprised you didn’t include the infamous biker short somewhere in here.

Haha Granny Chic just has such a good ring to it LOL! I agree with you brooches and puff sleeves are so cute! And yes I skipped out on bike shorts only because I think that trend is (slowly) dying! I think it would have stayed big for summer if not for COVID but with everyone having been stuck in loungewear for the past 3 months a lot of trend forecasters are saying summer trends will be so much more focused on dramatic, dressed up pieces and I agree so I think we won’t see bike shorts nearly as much!
Love all of these but tie dye is by far the one trend that I’ve completely embraced and gotten to play around with plenty. xoxo, Sarah
I love tie-dye! It has such nostalgia wrapped up in it!
It looks like I’m falling WAY behind on all the trends, because I don’t have a single item from any of these categories in my closet right now! I guess I’m one for more “classic” pieces, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have some fun with trends every now and then. I like the square-toed shoes and the “granny accessories” the most!
Both those are such great ones to try out! And they would pair well with classics in your closet – a graphic tee, blazer and jeans with square-toed shoes and glasses on a chain would look amazing!
I’m all for a big sleeve and voluminous dresses right now! They’re such fun trends!
They so are!
Beautiful dress! Such lovely colors!
Life is a Shoe
Thank you so much Celyn!
such a cute dress! I can’t believe bucket hats are making a come back, I dont think I will ever wear one again though ha!
Haha a lot of people have definitely said that! I’d say try one one in a store just to see! I was surprised how much I liked them! I’m not a hat person usually but they look WAY better on me than ball caps, straw hats, etc!
I’ve been loving the square toed heels myself, and just got my first pair of them. I’m so glad tie-dye is staying for a while longer because I absolutely love it.
They are so beautiful right!
Not only will there be a few purchases from your list; I ran through my wardrobe and pulled things out I already had!! Square toed soft pink mules, a tie dye dress. Exciting! Thank you for the post and the giveaway.
OOOO i want to see those square toed soft pink mules, they sound so chic!!
Thanks for sharing those resources. I’m warming up to the dramatic sleeves and I would love a pair of squared toe sandals.
You’re so welcome Emely! Square toed sandals definitely are so beautiful, I was surprised at how flattering they look on!
That’s a lovely maxi dress on you! 🙂 and I have been enjoying escaping into the world of blogs – i know I’m lucky to have that privilege with everything going so wrong elsewhere in the world, but I’m needing that frivolous escape at the end of the day!
Thanks so much for joining the #WeekdayWearLinkup! The new link up is live on my blog now, I’d love you to join again. 🙂
Thank you so much Mica!
