Makeup trends, like fashion trends, can go from totally-wearable everyday styles to the most dramatic looks that only suit a runway or film set. A lot of women are hesitant to experiment with makeup trends because they feel they will be too impractical for everyday life. That isn’t always the case though! Today I’m reviewing five wearable summer 2020 makeup trends. These are makeup trends for this season that you can easily incorporate into your own makeup routine and to create beautiful looks that are on trend but totally fit your life. (Here is my everyday makeup look if you missed it!).
With each of the wearable summer 2020 makeup trends I’ll share some example photos. (Note: all are from makeup artists/brands instagram accounts – the source account is listed on the photo and all the credit goes to these talented artists!). I’ll chat about tips for trying out this makeup trend and I’ll share products that will help you achieve the look. Let’s get to it!
With the 90’s taking over the fashion scene this year, it’s only time some of that decade made it’s way into makeup trends! Blue eyeliner is probably the biggest makeup trend for summer 2020. We started seeing this trend on runways last fashion week, then it moved to celeb red carpets, and now we’re really seeing it made wearable for everyone.
It’s one of the most wearable summer 2020 makeup trends since it’s easy to do – no new makeup skills need to be learned – and you can keep the rest of your makeup the same as you normally would, just swap out your eyeliner for something blue! This look is versatile because you can wear a bold metallic blue cat eye (like photo 1) or you can use pencil eyeliner for a dark blue liner look (like photo 2). Whatever you try, make sure you go with a long-lasting eyeliner as the bold color is going to make any smudges or wear throughout the day more noticeable. Below I’ve linked my favorite blue eyeliners (all pass the long-lasting test!) The darker ones are great for a more subtle liner look and the metallic and lighter blues are great for making more of a statement. The one I’m wearing in the above photo is the first one, the Urban Decay 24/7 pencil eyeliner in “Abyss”.
We often see the shift from matte looking makeup for fall/winter to more natural glowy makeup in spring/summer but this year we are seeing that trend on overdrive – very, very dewy skin is all the rage as one of the summer 2020 makeup trends. As you can see in the above photos it’s all about a healthy, dewy glow all over the skin and then amped up shine/gloss where sunlight hits – your brow bone, cheeks, tip of your nose and chin.
To achieve this look: start with a primer with a bit of glow/radiance to it. My favorite is the coconut skin primer.
Then, you can change up your foundation to a more dewy one (my favorites are linked below) but you don’t have to! If you love your current foundation, you can add a ‘dewy setting spray‘ on top to help achieve a dewy look.
Then, get in there with that highlight! A cream based highlight will really give you a glow and is best used on your nose & chin. A powder highlight works great around your cheeks and browbone.
This trend, like the blue eyeliner, is a great one because it’s really easy to achieve. A lot of us for everyday swipe on a some subtle gold shadow or do a gold/neutral smoky eye. This is just an update version of that! Switch out your golds and browns for rose gold! Again, you can make this as subtle or dramatic as you want. A one color rose gold eye is subtle and pretty and an ombre rose gold cat eye with matching undereye color (like photo 2) is dramatic and gorgeous.
Below are my favorite rose gold shadows and rose shadow palettes including super affordable ones like this $10 nude & rose gold palette. My favorite single eyeshadow that is incredibly pigmented and quality is this Stila shimmer & glow liquid eyeshadow in Jezebel.
Watercolor lids, also known as cotton candy lids, are a bold but still wearable makeup trend. This trend does take a bit of practice, but at the end of the day if you can do a smokey eye you can do watercolor lids! Named because they look like you were playing with watercolors, you blend in 3-4 different colored shadows on your eyelids- usually softer pastel tones (hence looking like cotton candy). The main colors used are soft pinks, purples & greens.
This again can be dramatic ( photo 4) but it can be more subtle (photo 5). Opt for less pigmented colors in very pastel shades to create a subtle watercolor lids look. Below are my favorite shadows that will help you achieve this look!
Last but not least, and definitely the quickest and easiest makeup trend for summer 2020 – hot pink lips! Whether it’s a hot pink matte or a totally glossy hot pink lip, the shade is huge this summer. Keep the rest of your makeup subtle to allow your lips to be the stand out feature (photo 1) or go bold and match your eyeliner to your lips for a big night out (see photo 2).
Below are my favorite hot pink lipsticks, glosses & tints. For the lipsticks I picked long wear styles to share since with a color this bold you do not want it smudging! I have really dry lips and so can have a hard time with matte longwear products, but I’ve found this hot pink liquid lipstick to be pretty darn good at not being drying while still staying matte & long wear – plus it’s clean, vegan beauty!
I’ll be wearing all 5 of these wearable summer 2020 makeup trends, but my favorite is the blue eyeliner. I’ve switched out my usual dark brown eyeliner for a dark blue and it I love that it still looks polished and professional enough to wear to work (… or right now ‘zoom work’ lol).
I hope you’re all doing well, I know we’re all getting a bit sick of social distancing and being stuck inside. Playing with makeup has definitely been something that has helped keep me feeling happy so hopefully that helps you too.
Speaking of happy: this morning our new Nespresso machine arrived and I could not be more excited about it! Our old coffee machine broke at the beginning of social distancing and it has been a rough few months lol. I am so excited to have my Nespresso coffee again! They have a new flavor out called Caramel Cookie and it is the stuff caffeinated dreams are made of. Trust me.
On that note, I’m off to make myself a cup of coffee… and probably play around with makeup haha. Thanks for reading and have a great day!
